Many homeowners suffer the same problem: when moving into a new home or reorganizing theirs for a new, fresh look, their furniture just never seems to match up. Whether it’s because of hand-me-downs, thrift store finds, or the mere accumulation of various pieces of in a variety of finishes, looks, and design schemes, this problem isn’t yours alone. Most designers face it at least a few times in their career and every homeowner gets exasperated on occasion with their own stockpile of eclectic furnishings. Here are a few tips, picked up from the pros, that can help you turn your mismatched into marvelous.

Update the color, hardware or both. Knobs, handles and feet can all be replaced with a few minutes and a couple tools. Taking the knobs and handles off of dressers or cupboards and replacing them with new ones can make your furniture look new and create a matching look - even if they’re from different sets. The feet on couches, settees, and chairs can be easily replaced to draw the eye towards a common denominator. Refreshing an old, beat up piece with a new stain or paint coat is also a great idea to pull together pieces that may not traditionally match.

Create a focal point. Rather than making your eclectic bunch an eyesore, draw the eye with a statement light fixture. Then accessorize with funky frames, playful pillows, and some pops of color.

Replace the legs. Table legs might look like they’re permanent, but they’re not. Take off the boring legs on your table and go for a more modern vibe that may tie together your contemporary living space.

Make a statement. Mismatched furniture can look deliberate if it’s done properly. Bring your pieces into harmony through a statement rug. There are so many options for this, but we’d recommend an abstract one with awesome coloring.

Keep it in the family. The color family, that is. Create a cohesive feeling by playing up the same colors on repeat. Stick with emerald, ochre, cobalt, or what have you and then pair pillows with upholstery, throws with tapestries - or however much is needed until the room is drawn together!

Keep these tips in mind, and keep us in mind, when it comes to your next project. Creating a beautiful new space can be as easy as knowing what to do and a little work! Check out our designer hardware at www.federalbrace.com.
